Meet Janis, the ferocious and fabulous Harris Hawk from Treviso, Italy. Named after the legendary Janis Joplin, she is not just any bird of prey: Janis is a unique and extraordinary animal, and we have formed a bond that transcends the typical relationships between humans and animals.
Janis came into my life at a very young age and quickly formed a special bond with me. As she got older, she recognized me not only as a parental figure, but also as a partner. During the spring months when her hormones are bubbling, she wants to be flirt.
Our unique relationship goes beyond the typical pet owner dynamic and is characterized by deep mutual understanding and affection.
From a young age, Janis displayed impressive hunting skills, quickly chasing pesky pigeons out of Tuscany’s castle.
I immediately realized I had something special in my hands. After just a little training, Janis was able to hunt effectively on her own, clearing several areas of pest birds over the next few years. Janis is a great hunter, and the two of us spent entire days hunting during a particularly difficult period in her life. It was therapeutic for me, and Janis always wanted to hunt with her “husband”.
But Janis isn’t all work and no play. She loves long walks in the woods and flying on mountain slopes. She is also known to cuddle anyone other than her owner’s partner during the mating period, although she does get jealous and will not allow anyone rather then me into her aviary during this time.
Janis and I have a unique bond in depth and complexity. Like any couple, we have our disagreements, sometimes resulting in Janis’ attempts to imitate her namesake, Janis Joplin, albeit unsuccessfully.
Despite these occasional disagreements, Janis and I love and accept each other for who we are. Our relationship is one of mutual respect and deep affection, and our bond is a testament to the amazing connections that can form between animals and humans.
Check out the attached photos and videos to see how beautiful and extraordinary our bond truly is. Janis is not just a bird, she is a magnificent creature that has brought so much joy and companionship into my life, and I am grateful for every moment we spend together.
